The Internet’s longest running web game, and what used to be my favorite, until today, Hollywood Stock Exchange went in for a site makeover and came out this week looking like an orange ad-ware-filled blog monster with its heart ripped out and replaced with banner ads. I have been ‘playing’ HSX for almost 10 years; you ‘buy’ (with fake money) stocks in movies and based on a specific formula, the share price is calculated on the movie’s estimated take, and then it’s actual gross at the box office. It was a great site, fun game, and was well designed back in the day — but now, the owners of HSX thought that it’d be a brilliant idea to build the site on DRUPAL and MySQL instead — this is the route that Joe Blow web designer goes down for a basic site or small business website — HSX is not just another site. They should’ve spent more than $0 on the overhaul to make the site work well. For shame, HSX. Epic fail. You have lost a fan and what will probably be many more until you do what’s right and hire some web designers with actual talent in UI design.
