Schmock To The Future Part III

Jonathan Schmock in "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off"

In our third and final installment, martyz.com had the pleasure of sitting down with Chez Quis’ favorite Maitre D’, writer, actor, travelair, noveleer Mr. Jonathan Schmock — whom you most likely remember as the man who wouldn’t let Ferris Bueller into the fancy French restaurant but is known for many many more things, as you’ll find out shortly.

If you were to have an iTunes Celebrity Playlist, what would be your top 3 songs to share with the world?

Hmmm, that’s tough… (to SHARE with the world? Meaning obscure?) Tonight: Nina Simone- “who know’s where the time goes?…” The Harmonicats- “mack, the knife…” and Charley Walker – “who will buy the wine?…”

How’d you get hooked up with your roles on Arrested Development?

Jim Vallely and I were stand up comedy partners and still best pals. We’ve known Mitch Hurwitz for a long time. I get a call to do something fun… I show up. Plus, there’s money and food…

What movies, books, and or TV shows most influenced your sense of humor as a young Jonathan?

“It’s a Mad Mad… World…” “The Tonight Show…” “Saturday Night Live…” “Star Trek…” “The Wild Wild West…” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E…” Watching Jackie Gleason with my dad… Mort Sahl’s books… Kliban cartoons, Jules Feiffer… Woody Allen anything… “Blazing Saddles…”

Writing or acting? Or directing? Or all? Which tickles your fancy the most?

I’d probably be more of a “success” if I did one thing and didn’t try and do a lot of different stuff and have so much fun. People say I’m most effective as a director because it encompasses a little of everything. I like that.

Aside from your own work and Arrested Dev, are there other sharp-witted comedies (TV and or movie) that you’d like to have a hand in?

I like to get a call and to show up! Collaboration with so many creative people (like, a HUNDRED…) really is an amazing rush. Single camera and hour long is kind of where it’s at right now, especially if there’s an element of humor. I am glad HBO is doing multi cam stuff like “Lucky Louie.” I just saw “Nacho Libre” and it gave me that “DAMN, that was good! …” (why didn’t I think of that!?!) feeling.

If you could tell aspiring TV / movie writers one thing:

Learn to be disciplined. Not a very clever response, but if you’re not talented, you’ll find out. If you’re not disciplined, you won’t.

Adam Sandler’s “Click” — does it upset you as much as it upsets me to see a movie that had its plot stolen from a third-grader made $40 million on its opening weekend? Has America lost it’s sense of taste?

Yes. Yes. Well, no. Well, yeah, kind of. But no, as soon as you say that, you’re saying the music’s too loud. Thing’s go in cycles.

Fun plans for the 4th of July weekend?

It’s my girlfriend and my anniversary so hopefully watching the fireworks in the good way…

If you were to purchase a sausage from Abe Froman, the Sausage King of Chicago what condiments would be placed on said sausage?

Don’t the people in Chicaaaaaahgo put ketchup on a hot dog? Not me, I’m 47th and B’way: mustard and kraut.

Jonathan Schmock — thank you for joining “Inside the martyz.com Studio” — I’ll spare you the Bernard Pivot questions.

Alright kiddos — it’s Friday - you know what that means — time for everyone’s favorite game show….
