When I think of Michael Bay, I think of lens filters highlighting orange skies, chase scenes shot from helicopters and weak-ass storylines — in his latest flick The Island he pretty much meets all expectations — although this particular storyline is a bit more interesting than some of his earlier flicks.
The gist: Ewan “Obi-Wan” Macgregor and Scarlett “I’m Hot As Eff” Johannsen star as two clones in the year 2019 who’ve got a little thing going on. Stuff happens, things explode, and they rescue humanity.
There were multiple chase scenes, many explosions and one particularly unrealistic stunt where they fall 70 stories into the unexplained safety net that catches them below — that was a bit ridiculous. The blatant product placement was a bit too much too… sometimes movies do it well in subtle ways but AQUAFINA, MICROSOFT and CADILLAC were thrown at your face so much.. it was almost satirical.
According to EW, they threw down $7 mil for a concept car from Cadillac that looked pretty sweet — when it appeared on-screen you heard a few ‘ooohs’ from the audience — and then one random guy hilariously yelled “ohhhhhh..” as if a bit too excited. that was funny.
Overall the flick fell around expectations (5.7 Zaps) — if you like futuristic action stuff and hot actresses named Scarlett Johansen– check this mama-jama out… but if not, then save your $$ for good movies.
