zap 5 summer music
it’s been too long since i’ve had some fresh jams up in the cut — i’d like to offer up some new ditties, what I’m revisiting and what to stay away from.
There’s one thing I used to say in high school, whenever someone asked me what kind of music I listened to.. i’d always say everything but country and God-music — now that’s not really the case…. as the most non-religious person I’ve ever met I’m hooked on rendition of a popular gospel song by the Edwin Hawkins Singers entitled “Oh Happy Day” — there are about 500 versions of this song around but this version is so underproduced and so real, listening to it brings you right into some steamy Alabama baptist church with all your friends and neighbors singin’ about J-dog and how the sun shines into your heart real big every day.
The Pat McGee Band has a new album out — they’re a Virginia band and I should probably have some kind of allegiance to them because they A) are from my state and 2) did some documentary with my alma mater after I graduated — here’s the problem I have with them: they sound like a royalty-free music band — like the kind of shit that’s not quite good enough to make it into a cable network’s program but just good enough for a corporate training video — I suggest not buying their album, but if you happen to catch them at a wine festival, county fair or on the parking lot-stage of a large music festival — take a moment or two to listen out of respect for Virginia and to see what the hell I’m talking about. Deal? Good. moving on.

A great track from hike school by Oasis that always makes me think of driving fast down West Ox road in the summer.
Before I forget, I saw “Hotel Rwanda” last night (7.9 zaps) — if you need a place to stay in Rwanda — pick the Sleep Inn or Econo Lodge … trust me on this. You do NOT want to stay at “Hotel Rwanda”…..although I hear the Pat McGee band will be playing a wedding there in a few weeks.. so whatev.
Also recently, I watched on the DVD — Team America: World Police and must admit that they have some hilarious music in there.. from the main theme song to the more depressing ‘bummer remix’ which is no doubt played during the fall of a comrade, the south park bros. never fail when it comes to inappropriate songwriting.
Ahhh, Feist… it’s like the chick from Morcheeba, Joss Stone and Sade got into some naughty little makeout session on a big soft-blanket in some shady little corner of Central Park around 8:30pm in July — and this was the music playing on the nearby ghetto blaster…one evening. Those naughty little vixens.
Brendan Benson, who’s suffered similar record-company troubles to Wilco and the like should have some more success with his most recent snappy release, The Alternative to Love — me likey. He’s got some southern-style riffs mixed with a little Cali-style .. it’s good ess. Some cheesy lyrics at parts — but good tunage makes up for it. Good ess. Get it.
I haven’t really gotten into Bloc Party yet — I’ll let you know if it happens.
The Sundayrunners have a sweet album out cleverly titled “Sundayrunners” — it came out in March sometime and have only recently been hearing some of their stuffs. S’good. I’ll only recommend buying an album if 5 or more songs make me want to listen to them again… and such is the case with this album — particularly their catchy “Flying Saucers” and “Memories Left at Sea”

By the way, the Trey Parker/Matt Stone movie I was trying to think of at your party was the classic Orgasmo, featuring Ron Jeremy and “Choda Boy”… also introducing the concept of DVDA.
