igby goes down
Culkin (cul’kin) n. - 1. last name of acting family Macaulay, brother Kieran and family Rory, Christian, Quinn, Dakota and Shane
v. 2. - An act accomplished by one kneeler and one pusher; kneeler gets down on all fours behind victim and on cue pusher shoves victim, sending victim sprawling backward and stumbling over kneeler. A prank popular amongst the 7 to 11 year old set; and twenty-somethings.
History of the definition: A group of people were at a bar in NYC and spotted actor Macaulay Culkin - the urge to pull the prank on the actor gradually grew stronger over the evening but was never accomplished, but forever became known as a ‘Culkin’.
The following was excerpted from a friend in NYC’s first-hand account with Kieran Culkin this weekend at Central Park’s summerstage. The names have been changed to protect the guilty:
Nearing the end of a Modest Mouse performance at Central Park Summerstage on June 20, 2005 is when history was made. It had nothing to do with the performers on stage, but rather with a few very lucky show goers in attendance. The Culkin took a giant step farther into its quest for global acceptance and dominance.
Kieran Culkin, younger brother of Macaulay (for whom the act was named after) received his 1st Culkin on the astroturf of Summerstage. Adam Smith pusher) and Lucy Jones (kneeler) were the two heroes responsible for making it happen.
Unfortunately Mr. Culkin was not too pleased with the act, grabbing Adam by the shirt and then shoving a beer in his face followed by some spit to the head. The pusher and kneeler each escaped unscathed with shit eating grins on their faces. “The Queen has gone down and now its onto the King!” exclaimed Adam face still soaked with beer. Indeed, it must be only a matter of time before the younger Culkin tells his brother all about the act that has been named after him.
“This is the kind of event we have been waiting some time for,” said Johnny T., one of the 1st people to coin the term. “Its great to see it come full circle several years later, and hear that a Culkin has been Culkined.”
“I just closed my eyes and got down on my knees,” recalled Lucy after the incident. “Its something I’ve done so many times, something I dream about all the time and when I got the signal from Adam I knew it was Go time. There was nothing that was going to stop us.”
“The act of Culkining has gained tremendous momentum since its unveiling in January of 2001″, said Treetops. “We can only hope this momentum carries us farther into the 21st century.”
Reached at his vacation home in Nantucket, Matthew “Warrior” Maxtone had this to say: “I am very proud of the NYC crew of monkeys. It brings tears to my eyes to see such a monumental thing happen. I just wish I was there to see it myself.”
The team of Jackass Monkeys that embrace the Culkin see this as nothing but inspiration for further culkining and the eventual culkining of Macaulay himself. Until then they will carry on in their duties knocking each other over as well as the occasional passerby.
Macauley could not be reached for comment at press time.
